Saturday Night Music – Peter Mulvey
Welcome to the New 12th Gate Coffee House!
One of the goals of this site beyond the obvious exercise in nostalgia has been to identify some of the cutting edge movements in the “indie” folk and jazz music scenes. Tonight, I am delighted to share some of the fascinating work of folksinger, song writer Peter Mulvey.

Mulvey is based in Madison, Wisconsin. I don’t know whether my friend Dave Werner is familiar with him or not. He has built quite a national following, even though he doesn’t show up in the national spotlight very often. Please welcome to the stage, Peter Mulvey in a 2007 performance of Trouble with Poets – recorded live at the High Noon Saloon. I will warn you that his lyrics can get somewhat explicit
Starting his musical career in Milwaukee while at Marquette University, he honed his performing skills while traveling in Dublin, Ireland. He later spent several years in Boston, where he frequently performed in the city’s subway system. He must have been back in Wisconsin when he wrote this song because it mentions being cold. Tender Blind Spot – recorded at the Peterborough Players Theatre. (3/3/07)
In addition to his dark provocative lyrics, I just love his intense percussive guitar style. This is a great example of what can be done with “Open G string tuning.” In this clip, Peter Mulvey performs Better Way live at KBCO Studio C in Boulder, Co on December 12, 2008.
Peter built much of his following through his relentless touring. Recently, his touring has taken an ecological twist as this short interview documents - The No Gasoline Tour.
This next clip is a song named Dynamite Bill – Mulvey sets his own context. Live performance at Tin Angel in Philadelphia, PA in Oct. 2007.
It’s Sad, Sad, Sad….Sad
I think this may become my Mulvey favorite. Let’s close the evening with Some People
