Welcome to the New 12th Gate!
Because I focused on saxophone musicians last week, some have demanded equal time. “What about the trumpet (coronet, Bach),” I was asked. So here we go….
Actually, I wanted to highlight Wynton Marsalis as well. Many consider him the most talented living trumpeter around today. I won’t argue the case, but he is certainly gifted andt\onight’s selections illustrate that point. Marsalis was born in New Orleans – jazz was his middle name – it had to be. Still he is classically trained and also teaches and writes. Marsalis is not only a great musician, but also a political activist providing key leadership as New Orleans continues to recover.

Marsalis is controversial as he focuses more on classical jazz than its evolution. In this clip, The Wynton Marsalis Quartet plays live on TV in December of 1996. They play a Louis Armstrong tribute (Mahogany Hall Stomp).. Wynton’s band included:
Marcus Roberts – piano
Reginald Veal – bass
Lewis Nash – drums
Marsalis has brought particular leadership to the programming of New York’s Lincoln Center. While this clip is primarily a solo performance the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra is there. Enjoy Cherokee.
Marsalis’ roots are clearly in New Orleans. This clip is not only great music, but fun video as well. – Bourbon Street Parade
Finally, I’ll close with a classical (classic) encore performance of the Carnival of Venice with John Williams and the Boston POPS Orchestra
Have a great weekend!
